Should I register a domain name before signing up with CyberShouts?
If you will be registering a domain for use on the CyberShouts network, we strongly recommend signing up with our service before registering your domain. Immediately upon account activation (one business day from registration) you will be sent simple instructions on how to register your domain in a way that it is automatically pointed to our network, eliminating the need for a domain transfer. Our dedicated customer service team will also aid you in the registration of your domain with the registrar of your choice free of charge

DNS Registration Records
There is a bit more involved in matching a domain name to an IP address than just having this information in a DNS table on a name server. Since there may be times when you want to add a domain name to your account, or change the way your existing domain name is handled, it is important to have some understanding of how DNS works.
There are organizations responsible for distributing domain names for those who wish to use them. Many countries have their own organization, often called an NIC agency. For most U.S. domain names, including those ending in .com, .net, .org, and .edu , this organization is called InterNIC. InterNIC is currently owned by a company called Network Solutions and is headquartered in Herndon, Virginia.
In order to use a specific domain name with your account, you must register the domain name with the NIC agency responsible for that domain. The registration process differs slightly depending on the NIC agency. A domain name registration shows the contact, technical and billing information for the domain, and defines a specific name server or group of name servers that will contain the information about where that domain name should point.
The name servers that appear in a domain’s registration record are called authoritative, because they contain the most current and correct name server information about the domain. For example, the domain registration for the domain Wapers.com appears as follows:
_____________________________________________________________
Registrant:
Wapers, Inc (WAPERS-DOM)
278-34,Samsundong-1ga,Sungbuk-gu
Seoul, SL 136-041
KR
Domain Name: WAPERS.COM
Administrative Contact, Technical Contact:
Lee, Sander (SL1984) sander@ELIM.NET
Sander & Associates
280-15,14/8,2F,Samsundong1ga,Seong bukgu,
Seoul
KR
8227637119 (FAX) 8224848577
Record expires on 08-Jun-2003.
Record created on 08-Jun-1999.
Database last updated on 19-May-2002 19:42:18 EDT.
Domain servers in listed order:
NIS.DACOM.CO.KR 164.124.101.31
NS2.DACOM.CO.KR 203.248.240.31
_____________________________________________________________
You can see from this record that the Registrant, or the organization that owns the domain, is Virtual Servers, LLC. The Administrative Contact, who is in charge of how this domain name is managed, is listed as “DNS Administrator.” A domain registration record also shows the name servers that are authoritative for the IP addresses to which the domain should point. The two name servers in this record are:
NIS.DACOM.CO.KR
NS2.DACOM.CO.KR
Registration information such as this is kept by the NIC agencies responsible for different types of domain names all over the world. It is important to note that domain registration records do not contain the IP addresses where a domain name should point, but merely the name and IP address of the name server that contain this information.
You can view the domain registration record for any existing domain name by trying out our Domain search facility.
DNS Zone Files
Once a NIC agency has a domain name registered and has information about which name servers are authoritative for a domain, the authoritative name servers need to have the information about the IP addresses that correspond to the domain loaded into its DNS tables. This information is called a DNS Record or zone file.
Although you will never be required to edit a DNS record directly, you may be interested in seeing what one looks like. The following is a sample DNS record, showing the two IP addresses associated with your account (Web server and mail server), as well as the IP address for your site statistics and Control Panel.

_____________________________________________________________
The first three lines show that three name servers are responsible for being authoritative. Please note that the information you enter into the name tables of the authoritative name server is not necessarily immediately available to your provider’s name servers. Because your local provider controls how often they update the name tables on their name servers, these changes may not show for several hours, or even several days. Even if a domain name is properly registered with your NIC agency, it may take Internet provider some time to receive that new information and to store it in their DNS tables.
The fourth line is called the MX record, and tells all mail coming to mydomain.com to point to your mail server. The remaining lines contain A records and cnames (short for canonical names). You can think of these as prefixes that can be used with your domain name, such as www.yourdomain.com, ftp.yourdomain.com or mail.yourdomain.com.

Domain name systems and Name Servers
Domain Name System and Name Servers
While it is possible for Internet clients to access a server by using its IP address, it becomes a burden remembering a string of numbers for each of your favorite sites. This invites the usefulness of the Domain Name System (DNS), which broadcasts more “friendly” names that correspond to IP addresses on the Internet. With DNS, anyone can type in a domain name (e.g. mydomain.com) which then gets resolved (translated) to a numerical address (e.g. 207.159.130.233). As an example, you can see that in most web browsers you are able to watch as a domain name is being resolved. This occurs at the bottom of the browser window. When you type in a web address the status bar of your browser may say:
Connecting to site 207.159.153.130...
Web site found, waiting for reply...
This indicates that your machine was able to match the IP address to the domain name you entered. In order to do this, your computer needs to have some sort of reference in which to look up domain names and match them to their corresponding IP addresses, much like how you would use a telephone book to correspond a friend’s name to their number. DNS, commonly referred to as your Name Server, is the computer’s phone book for the Internet.
When you initially set up your computer to connect to the Internet you were required to give it at least one name server so it would know where to look up the IP addresses of the domain names you access. Most people use two name servers: primary and secondary. This provides a redundant system so that in case one fails there is a backup. In the above example, you could have simply typed in the IP address of the server and the connection would have been made without needing to consult a name server. However, most people on the Internet, without knowing it, rely heavily upon DNS, so that they don’t have to worry about keeping track of all those IP addresses.
A name server’s only function is to maintain a table of domain names and matching IP addresses, called a DNS Table. Each domain name on the Internet has specific DNS servers that are responsible for keeping their information in their table and that DNS server is then responsible for broadcasting that information across the Internet.
Most likely, you chose a domain name for your account when you first signed up. Even if you didn’t choose one, often we can assign you a temporary IP. In either case, your domain already has an entry in the DNS tables of our name servers. This entry is an important part of what makes it possible for people to access your site on the Internet.

Registering a New Domain
This section describes the process of registering domain names through CyberShouts
To register a new domain name, you must first check the availability of that domain name. You can do so by using our "search for domain option on any page on our website, even this one, take a look at the menu on your left
After you find the domain name you want, you may go to the order page and follow the instructions there
Finally, before you can use a domain name with your Web server, you must request that our DNS staff add a record for the domain name on our name servers. You can do this using the Online Support Agent. You will need to include the name of the domain to add, as well as the name of the main domain for your account.
Domain Name registration costs $12.99
The site must absolutely be registered in my name. Do you have any problem with this?
Of course we don't have any problem with that. The Domain is registered with your information, there's no information about us whatsoever. You can also choose wether to host your domain on our servers or elsewhere.
Transferring a Domain Name
Owning a domain name and purchasing a a hosting package does not ensure your Web site will resolve properly on the Internet—CyberShouts must be made authoritative to your domain name. When configured properly, your domain name will successfully resolve to your physical Web site.
If you are transferring your domain name from a previous provider and would like it pointed to your CyberShouts account, please contact us at support@cybershouts.net
[Back to top] -
Uses of a Domain Name
A domain name and its various uses can be a confusing subject for anyone starting their own business on the Internet. This section will clarify the types and uses for a domain name including cnames, pointer domains, and virtual hosts.
There are two types of domain names that are commonly used on the Internet:
Domain Name: A domain name is an easy to remember URL which directs to your physical address (IP address) on the Internet. It is a 'friendly name' for your site, like www.yourname.com.
Canonical Domain Name: A canonical domain, also referenced as cname, includes a prefix name before the actual domain. It is the process of adding a name in front of the domain. A Canonical Domain can also add an element of 'size' to your site, as more than one URL is used. This is illustrated below:
http://sales.yourdomain.com
http://support.yourdomain.com
http://products.yourdomain.com
Note: Our servers are configured so that your domain acts as a wildcard to any name placed before it. As such, all canonical domains placed before your domain will resolve to your primary Web site, until you specify otherwise with Technical Support.
Each of the above names can be used in the following ways:
Primary Account Domain: You can use your domain to represent your primary Web account, or administrative account, with us.
Pointer Domain: A pointer domain, also referenced as an additional domain name, is a domain that simply points to or directs to another domain or Web site. It does not have its own unique Web content, hence the name pointer.
Virtual Host: A virtual host, also referenced as an additional domain for virtual hosting, is a domain name which has its own unique content. It will direct to a subdirectory on your account. A Virtual Host can be thought of as a sub-lot of land.
Pricing and configuration vary for each of the above uses.
What is your policy and procedures on domain registrations and transfers ?how long do they typically take?
For Registration:
You simply place an order for the domain you want, and in 24 hours the domain will be registered and propagated to the designated server.
For Transfer:
You'll also need to place an order for the transfer, the transfer itself is for free, but any transfer is followed by a 1 year registration, with the normal registration price.
You'll be sent a confirmation email from your old registrar confirming the transfer, once you confirm this, your domain is usually transferred within 24 hours.

We recommend the following procedure of switching web hosts to eliminate any possible downtime:
1.Signup with CyberShouts
2.Upload your website and ensure that it is functioning properly on our network.
3.Transfer your domain name to our network (see below), if you have one.
4.Cancel your former hosting account.
Our customer service team will gladly help you with this process, which typically takes 1-4 days.
If your domain name already exists and needs to be transferred to our network, which is the case with most of our clients, you will receive simple instructions on how to transfer your domain to our network upon account activation (one business day from registration). This typically simply involves the modification of two pieces of information with your domain registrar, which tell it which hosting network to point your domain name to. Our customer service team will aid you in the transfer of your domain and ensure that you are up and running on our network in the shortest amount of time possible.

Getting Started -
Accessing your site on the web
Your account has been assigned a unique IP address that identifies it from the other computers on the Internet. It is comprised of a series of four, numerical fields separated by dots (e.g. 207.159.xxx.xx). You will be given this IP address as soon as your order has been processed. With this address you will be able to access your web server at any time through your favorite browser by simply typing it into the address bar.
Note: This IP address may change from time to time to support our network infrastructure and growth.
Because you want your Web server to be easily accessible on the Internet, you purchase and register a domain name (e.g. yourdomain.com) to point to your computer’s IP address. This is explained in the Registering a Domain Name section of this guide. Once done properly, you can access your site using the domain name instead of IP address as illustrated below:
http://216.122.55.xxx
http://www.yourdomain.com
Your account, along with files on your account, is accessible through a Uniform Resource Locator (URL). Because your visitors will access your site on the Internet, the URL is preceded with the HTTP protocol: http://www.yourdomain.com.
All files placed in the /htdocs directory on your account will become available to the public, most commonly index.html, default.html, etc. If you create folders beneath this directory and files in those directories, then visitors to your site will access those files using a path that starts with /htdocs. For example an index.html placed in a sales directory beneath /htdocs will be accessed using the following URL:
http://www.yourdomain.com/sales/index.html
You do not need to include the file name in the URL as long as you provide it with one of the following names:
default.htm
default.html
default.asp
index.htm
index.html
index.asp

Advanced Email Features
This includes the following:
Catch-All Addresses:
To forward all email to non existing accounts on your server to a specific email.
For example, if your site is www.someone.com and you have one email setup on it which is for instance webmaster@someone.com, if someone sends an email to admin@someone.com it will be normally returned to sender because the address doesn't exists, but this isn't the case here, catch all addresses enables you to receive all email to your site even if the address is wrong providing that @someone.com is correct.
Auto-Responders:
When someone emails you the Auto-responder will reply to the sender with a pre-defined mesaage you will setup in your control panel.
Mailing Lists:
To create lists of emails for you to send to from a specific email, this is a useful feature for newsletters.

Email Account defined
Email accounts, also called POP accounts are physical accounts that resides on your mail server. You can receive, store, and send email messages using this account. Email accounts have a pre-defined amount of storage space, a username, and a password associated with it.
you can setup your own unique email addresses in for your domain. For instance, if your domain is abc.com, you can setup email addresses like these:
dave@abc.com
sue@abc.com
sales@abc.com
support@abc.com

Introduction to Email
Unix-based mail services provide the highest level of system stability and performance.
Your account email service operates much like a post office. It can send, forward, deliver, and receive electronic mail messages. It sends outgoing mail immediately, via the Internet, to any recipient you wish. As long as the message is sent to a valid email address, your mail server will determine the correct route to get it there.
A majority of your email configuration and administration can be performed using the Control Panel.

Introduction to the Internet
Introduction to the Internet
In its simplest terms, the Internet is a network of networks built upon a common set of protocols that allow computers across the planet to communicate. The World Wide Web (WWW or Web) is a "hyperlinked" communications service that piggy-backs on top of the Internet's communications technology (TCP/IP). It is composed of countless hyperlinked graphical Web pages that host a wide range of text, image, audio, and video media.
"Hyperlinks" are a way of actively linking documents (and other files) to other documents on other computers across the Internet, such as this link which brings you to the Post Office Analogy below. "Hypertext" documents (Web pages) on the WWW are files that contain active hyperlinks to other documents or files, which, in turn, may contain links to even more documents, etc. Clicking on a link (usually blue and underlined text or an image) takes you to another document. Specifically, it creates a request to be sent to the computer hosting the other documents or Web pages.
The "Hypertext Transfer Protocol" (http) is the communications protocol that makes this possible. HTTP runs on top of the Internet's TCP/IP protocol and defines how different types of hyperlinked data (text and multimedia) are transmitted and accessed. Graphical "hyperlinked" Web pages are created and displayed mostly through the use of the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). HTML is a simple way of using text characters in certain combinations ("tags") with symbols to describe how a Web page should be displayed in a Web browser. Your Internet browser (most commonly Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator) uses these HTML tags to display the web page on your screen.
The behind-the-scenes integration gives the Internet an 'endless' appearance. Here is a Post Office Analogy to the Internet.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Post Office Analogy
If you were to think of the Internet as a Post Office, it would look like this:
The letter carriers (trucks and airplanes) would equate to the Internet communications equipment (computers) and wiring.
The envelope would equate to TCP/IP, the protocol used for information travel.
The letter would equate to HTTP, the protocol used to define the format.
For the most part, you will never need to know the above intricacies. Modern domain purchasing, Web site creation tools, and site control panels take the hassle out of Web site administration on the Internet.

Reading Email Messages
This takes into account that you have properly setup email accounts on your mail server as outlined in the Creating Email Accounts section.
Your account includes a mail server equipped to send, forward, deliver, and receive electronic mail messages. Email messages are stored on your mail server until you pick them up. You can either read and send messages directly from the server using your Webmail or you can use the traditional Email Client to download and read messages on your personal computer.
What are email aliases
Email Aliases are a type of email 'pointer' or 'forwarder' that sends the message to another address. One email alias can point to multiple email addresses, and multiple aliases can point to a single address.
One practical use of email aliasing is to create an alternate, easy-to-remember address for a long or awkward email account. This is similar to the practice of using words or phrases in place of telephone numbers. For example, you may have trouble remembering a phone number such as 1-800-932-8437 but have little difficulty remembering 1-800-WEATHER. Likewise, if you have an awkward address such as “11243.332@somedomain.com,” you may wish to provide an alias such as “bob@yourdomain.com” that will point to the same destination.
You can also use email aliasing to distribute email messages to a particular group of people. For example, if you have a group of friends or business associates to whom you regularly send group mail, you could create an alias called “everyone@yourdomain.com” that forwards mail to everyone in that group.
Lastly, aliases are used to give your organization a larger, corporate appearance. Instead of telling people to direct their questions regarding sales, support, employment, and general information all to the same address, you can create aliases at “sales@yourdomain.com,” “support@yourdomain.com,” “jobs@yourdomain.com,” and “info@yourdomain.com,” all of which can be redirected to a single address.

What is FTP?
Uploading Content using FTP
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a standardized method of transferring files between computers, regardless of the platform or operating system the computers are running. FTP is a protocol or method of transferring files. There are many FTP client programs that make FTP very easy to use.
The FTP client is a program that runs on your local computer and interacts with your Web server’s FTP service. Most FTP programs have a graphical interface that make it easy to transfer and manipulate files. If you don’t have an FTP client, you can download one from the Internet for free. The following list of FTP clients is just a sample of those available for download from the Internet (either evaluation copy or full release):
Microsoft Internet Explorer
CuteFTP
SmartFTP
WS_FTP
FTP Voyager
Crystal FTP 2000
For instructions on installing and configuring these clients, please refer to the documentation that accompanies the product. There are two types of FTP access available to a Web site.
Administrative FTP
Anonymous FTP
Note: Anonymous FTP is not a recommended procedure
Because you can upload, download, overwrite, and delete files using FTP; it is good practice to backup your site before making any significant changes!

World Wide Web
The World Wide Web is by far the most well known and widely talked about feature of the Internet. When most people refer to “surfing the web” or “going online” they are really talking about utilizing the Hyper-Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to access web content via their web browsers.
What most people don’t know is that the Internet is built around a naming scheme that uses unique, numerical IP addresses, similar to telephone numbers, to identify places (or nodes) on the network. This is done through Domain Name System (DNS). When you type in a Web address, like cybershouts.net, your Web browser resolves the alphabetical address through HTTP down to the numerical, physical location on the Internet, thus providing the World Wide Web (WWW).

What is Frontpage?
Microsoft FrontPage 2000
Before you can use Microsoft® FrontPage® 2000, you must purchase the FrontPage client program from a software distributor and install it on your computer. For an introduction to FrontPage 2000, how to purchase, installation questions and general information, please visit the official Microsoft FrontPage Web site. The following documentation will guide you in the right direction but is not intended to replace documentation provided by Microsoft Corporation.
FrontPage 2000 is a software package that allows you to easily create and maintain a Web site without in-depth knowledge of HTML or FTP. This is made possible by the FrontPage system, which consists of two parts:
FrontPage Client: The program is purchased through a software vendor and runs on your personal computer.
FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE): The extensions reside on the server and come pre-installed with your account.
Together, the two communicate with each other to formulate a seamless 'behind the scenes' upload and publishing process. All you need is a general understanding of FrontPage, which is very similar to Word, Publisher, and other Microsoft-based applications.
Before exploring all the features and options of FrontPage 2000, it is important to know that there are two ways you can create and modify your site:
Option 1: Open your site directly from the server and make ‘live’ or ‘hot’ changes to your site.
Option 2: Create your site on your local computer then upload the finished product to the server.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both methods. If you choose to open your site directly from the server and make changes (Option 1).. If you choose to create your site content locally then upload the finished product (Option 2), you will have a safe backup of the entire site, but the process is considerably longer than making a quick change directly to the site.
While you can use a combination of both methods, we do not recommend it. Each time you publish to the server, you overwrite existing content on the server.

What is MySQL?
The MySQL database server is the world's most widely used open source database. Its ingenious software architecture makes it extremely fast and easy to customize. Extensive reuse of code within the software and a minimalistic approach to produce functionally rich features have resulted in a database management system unmatched in speed, compactness, stability and ease of deployment. The unique separation of the core server from the table handler makes it possible to run MySQL under strict transaction control or with ultra fast transaction less disk access, whichever is most appropriate for the situation.

What is SSI?
Server Side Includes (SSI) are a popular solution on the Web because of their browser compatibility—most of the work is performed by the server. You can use SSI commands on your Web pages to insert content from another part of your site, creating a dynamic result. Web pages that contain an SSI will be processed or parsed by the server before displaying back on the page, very similar to the scripting process. The combination of static HTML page and the SSI files will be seamlessly displayed in the Web browser.
Web servers rely on a unique file extension to recognize an SSI, but each server is different. Initially, they required the *.ssi extension to process SSIs. Our servers require one of two file extensions to process SSIs in your Web pages:
*.stm
*.shtml
For example, a home page might be index.shtml instead of index.html. The below example illustrates the correct syntax for a SSI command in your Web pages:
This is a common SSI command. You could have chosen the echo, include, or confab commands instead of command. The argument attribute gives further instruction for the treatment of the SSI. Each SSI has its own set of arguments and values.
A popular SSI value is the include command. This command tells the server to insert text from a specified file into the Web page before delivering it to the browser. If you wanted a copyright statement or ‘last updated’ statement at the bottom of each page, you could use this SSI command on the bottom of each page. The syntax for this SSI command appears as follows:
